How it works
A fraction means dividing one number by another — the top part is the numerator and the bottom part is the denominator. The calculator first finds the answer, then divides the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor (GCD) to give the simplest form.
- Example 1: 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6 (decimal 0.8333). First we make the common denominator 6: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
- Example 2: 12/18 simplifies to 2/3, because both 12 and 18 are divisible by 6.
- Example 3: 7/4 as a mixed number is 1 3/4, as a decimal it is 1.75 and as a percent it is 175%.
Note: the denominator can never be 0 — dividing by 0 has no answer, so the calculator will show a friendly error.
How to use
- Enter the numerators and denominators in the calculator boxes above.
- Pick the operation — add, subtract, multiply or divide — for two fractions.
- Read the result as a simplified fraction, mixed number, decimal and percent.
- Use the second card to simplify one fraction, or the third to convert a fraction to decimal and percent.
Tips
- Watch the “Before Simplifying” box to learn how the GCD step reduces the answer.
- Improper fractions convert to mixed numbers automatically — handy for recipe scaling.
- A denominator of zero is undefined, so the tool shows an error instead of guessing.
