How simplifying works
The tool finds the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator using the Euclid method: it divides the larger number by the smaller one and keeps replacing the pair with the divisor and the remainder until the remainder is zero. The last non-zero remainder is the GCD. Dividing both the numerator and the denominator by the GCD gives the fraction in lowest terms. For example, 6/8 has a GCD of 2, so 6 ÷ 2 = 3 and 8 ÷ 2 = 4, giving 3/4.
