Split a PDF into Separate Pages: Free Step-by-Step Guide

To split a PDF, open a browser-based split tool, upload your PDF, choose how you want it divided — every page on its own, a page range, or one single page — and download the resulting files. The whole job usually takes under a minute for a normal document. You do not need to install software, and you do not need to convert the PDF to another format first.

When Splitting a PDF Actually Helps

  • You only need to send or submit one chapter, one invoice, or one form from a long document, not the whole file.
  • A file is too large to email or upload, and breaking it into smaller parts gets each part under the size limit.
  • Different people need different sections: for example, page 1 to 5 for one person and page 6 to 10 for another.
  • You want to remove a section and keep the rest as its own file, without editing the original.

Method 1: Split Every Page into Its Own File

Use this when each page is a separate item, such as scanned receipts, certificates, or single-page forms stored in one PDF.

  1. Open the Split PDF tool in your browser.
  2. Upload the PDF from your device.
  3. Choose the option to split into individual pages, if offered, or select all pages.
  4. Download the files. Each downloaded file contains one page, in the original page order.
  5. Rename the files right away (for example, receipt-jan.pdf, receipt-feb.pdf) so you can find them later.

Method 2: Split by Page Range

Use this when you want a few larger parts, such as chapters or sections.

  1. Open the Split PDF tool and upload the PDF.
  2. Decide your ranges before you start. Write them down: for example, pages 1 to 4, pages 5 to 9, and pages 10 to 12.
  3. Enter the first range and download that part, then repeat for each range.
  4. Check the page count of each downloaded file before you delete or replace the original.
  5. Keep the original file until you have confirmed that every part opens correctly.

Tip: page numbers in the tool usually start at 1 for the first page. If your document has a cover page, count it as page 1 even if it shows no printed number.

Method 3: Extract Just One Page

Use this when you need a single page, such as one signed page or one diagram.

  1. Open the Split PDF tool and upload the PDF.
  2. Select only the page you need.
  3. Download that single-page PDF and check that it is the right page before you send it on.
  4. If you need several separate single pages, repeat the step for each one rather than guessing a range.

What Stays the Same After Splitting

Splitting does not change the text, images, or layout of the pages. Each new file keeps the same page size and content as the original. Splitting does not remove passwords from a protected file, does not fix a damaged file, and does not make scanned text searchable — those are separate jobs.

Common Problems and Fixes

  • File will not upload: check the file size limit of the tool and your internet connection. If the file is very large, compress it first, or split it on a desktop if the browser tool refuses it.
  • Wrong pages in the result: you probably miscounted the cover page or a blank page. Count pages from the very first page of the file, including covers and blanks, and try again.
  • Downloaded file will not open: the original file may be damaged, or the download may have been interrupted. Re-upload the original and download again.
  • Password-protected PDF: a protected file must be unlocked before it can be split. Unlock it first if you have the password and the right to do so.
  • Pages in the wrong order: rename the downloaded parts in order before sending them, and check the first page of each part. Page order comes from the original file, so a scrambled result usually means the ranges overlapped.
  • Quality looks worse: splitting alone does not reduce quality. If a part looks blurry, the original page was already low quality, or the file was compressed in an earlier step.

Before You Send the Split Files

  • Open each part and check its first and last page.
  • Check that no page is missing between two parts and no page appears twice, unless you intended that.
  • Rename each part clearly (chapter, date, or recipient name) instead of leaving default names.
  • If a recipient needs the full document later, keep the original file somewhere safe.

Frequently asked questions

Is splitting a PDF free?

Splitting in a browser tool is normally free for everyday documents. Very large files may hit a size limit, in which case compressing the file first or splitting it in two passes usually works.

Does splitting a PDF change the quality?

No. Splitting copies the pages as they are, so text and images stay the same. Quality only changes if you also compress or re-save the file at a lower setting.

Can I split a scanned PDF?

Yes. A scanned PDF splits the same way as any other PDF. Splitting does not make scanned text searchable; that needs a separate text-recognition step.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Not until it is unlocked. If you know the password and have the right to use the file, unlock it first, then split it.

What is the difference between splitting and deleting pages?

Splitting creates new files from parts of the original. Deleting pages removes pages and leaves one smaller file. Split when you need more than one file; delete when you need one shorter file.
