How it is calculated

The moon returns to the same phase every 29.530588853 days — one synodic month. This tool measures the time passed since a known new moon (6 January 2000, 18:14 UTC), divides by the synodic month, and takes the remainder as the moon's age. The age gives the phase name, the illumination percentage, and the dates of the next new and full moon. The drawing above shows the lit part of the moon exactly as it appears for the current phase: the right side is lit while the moon is waxing, the left side while it is waning.

How to use

  1. Open the page — today's moon phase loads automatically.
  2. Read the phase name, illumination and moon age.
  3. Check the next new moon and next full moon dates below the moon.
  4. Come back any night — the moon updates itself every day.
