Tips
- A4 is the standard reference at 440 Hz; every octave up doubles the frequency.
- Each semitone step multiplies the frequency by about 1.0595 — the twelfth root of two.
- Wavelength shortens as frequency rises, which is why smaller instruments sound higher.
- Use the converter to check tuning: if your tuner reads 442 Hz on A, you are slightly sharp.
Note
Equal temperament formula: f = A4 x 2^((n - 69) / 12), where n is the MIDI note number. Wavelength is calculated with the speed of sound in air at 343 m/s.
