Step 3 — Balance and top-up: how it works
- Prepaid balance: the M-Tag account holds a balance. Each time you cross a toll plaza, the toll is deducted automatically — no cash needed at the barrier.
- Top up before it runs out: if the balance is too low, the lane may not open for you. Top up at the M-Tag point or motorway service area before long trips.
- Keep the receipt: when you pay for registration or a top-up, keep the printed or written receipt with the tag number until the balance shows correctly.
- Lost or damaged tag: report it at a registration point so the old tag is blocked and a replacement can be issued — do not just buy a second tag for the same vehicle without asking staff.
- Which vehicles need it: generally every vehicle that uses the motorways. Without a tag you must use cash lanes, which are slower and may cost more.
