Pakistan Trademark Registration Guide

Protect your brand name, logo or slogan in Pakistan. This free guide walks you through what can be trademarked, how to pick the right trademark class, the filing steps with the Intellectual Property Organisation of Pakistan (IPO), and the documents you need.

Fee-change disclaimer: IPO filing fees change from time to time. Always check the latest fee schedule and timeline on the official website ipo.gov.pk before filing.

What can be trademarked

A trademark can protect almost anything that identifies your business. Common examples:

  • Brand names — e.g. the name of your shop, product line or startup.
  • Logos and symbols — your brand mark or emblem.
  • Slogans and taglines — short phrases linked to your brand.
  • Product packaging designs — distinctive labels and wrappers.
  • Domain names and business names — as far as they are distinctive and not generic.

Generic words (e.g. "Fresh Milk" for milk) and misleading or official marks usually cannot be registered.

Pick your trademark class (45-class system)

Pakistan follows the international Nice Classification: classes 1–34 cover goods and classes 35–45 cover services. You must file your application in the class that matches your product or service. Use the searchable picker below.

You can apply in more than one class if your business covers several categories.

Step-by-step filing method

  1. Trademark search. Search the IPO trademark database (or this guide's class picker for direction) to check that no identical or very similar mark already exists. A conflicting mark is the most common reason for rejection.
  2. File the application. Submit the application form (TM-1 for a new mark) with your chosen class, applicant details, a clear image of the mark and the prescribed fee. Filing can be done online at ipo.gov.pk or at an IPO office.
  3. Examination. An IPO examiner checks the application for legal requirements and conflicts. If there is an objection, you receive an examination report and get time to reply or amend.
  4. Journal publication. Accepted marks are published in the IPO Trademark Journal. Anyone can file an opposition within the legal period (usually 2 months).
  5. Registration. If no opposition is filed (or it is decided in your favour), the mark is registered and you receive the registration certificate. A registered trademark in Pakistan is valid for 10 years and can be renewed.
