How the formulas work

• Dogs: the first year counts as 15 human years, the second year adds 9, and each year after that adds about 5 for small dogs, 6 for medium dogs, and 7 for large dogs. Large dogs age faster and live shorter lives than small dogs.
• Cats: the first year equals 15 human years, the second adds 9, and each year after adds 4 human years.
• Rabbits: the first year equals about 12 human years, the second adds 6, and each year after adds about 5. Smaller breeds live longer than giant breeds.
• Hamsters: a rough estimate multiplies the age by 25, because a 2-year hamster is roughly equal to a 50-year-old human. Hamster aging is very fast.
• Parrots: the first year equals about 5 human years and each year after adds about 3, because many parrots live 30 to 60 years or more.

These are accepted estimates used by vets and pet organizations, not exact science. Actual aging depends on breed, diet, exercise and health care.
