Formulas used
- Gross profit = Selling price − Cost price.
- Margin % = (Gross profit ÷ Selling price) × 100 — your share of the selling price.
- Markup % = (Gross profit ÷ Cost price) × 100 — your share of the cost price.
- Break-even units = Monthly fixed costs ÷ Gross profit per unit, rounded up.
- Price from margin = Cost price ÷ (1 − Margin ÷ 100).
Tips
- A healthy retail margin on daily items is often 15–30%, but it depends on your costs and competition.
- Margin and markup are not the same — a 25% margin equals a 33.3% markup. Do not mix them up when quoting prices.
- Include all fixed costs (rent, salaries, electricity) to get an honest break-even number.
