How 90 minute sleep cycles work
- One sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes and passes through light sleep, deep sleep and dream sleep.
- Your brain repeats these cycles all night. Each cycle includes a dream phase near its end.
- Waking up during deep sleep causes sleep inertia, the heavy groggy feeling that can last an hour.
- Waking up during light sleep at the end of a cycle feels natural and fresh.
- The calculator adds a 15 minute buffer for the time most people need to fall asleep.
- Five to six cycles equal about 7.5 to 9 hours, the range most adults need.
