Practical smog tips

  • Wear a properly fitted N95 or KN95 mask when you go outdoors on smog days. A plain cloth mask gives little protection against fine particles.
  • Avoid outdoor exercise and move workouts indoors during smog season. Keep outdoor trips short and avoid rush hours with heavy traffic.
  • Keep windows and doors closed, especially in the morning and evening when smog is usually heaviest.
  • Use an air purifier indoors if you can, or keep air conditioner and fan filters clean so they trap more dust.
  • Drink enough water and limit tea or coffee if smog irritates your throat. Rinse eyes with clean water if they burn.
  • Check the AQI every day from October to January before planning school runs, sports or outdoor events.
  • Reduce smoke at home: avoid burning leaves or trash, and keep vehicle engines tuned to cut exhaust.
