How do I calculate the number of floor tiles I need?

Measure the floor length and width in feet, choose your tile size, enter how many tiles come in one box and add a wastage percentage. The tool divides the floor area by the area of one tile, adds wastage, and rounds up to full boxes.

What is a good wastage percentage for floor tiles?

10 percent is a safe default for most rooms. Use 5 percent for large open areas with big tiles, and 12 to 15 percent for rooms with many corners, diagonal laying, or small tiles that need many cuts.

How many tiles come in a standard box?

It depends on the tile size. A box of 12 by 12 inch tiles usually holds 8 pieces, 16 by 16 inch boxes hold 6 pieces, and 2 by 2 feet tiles usually come 4 per box. Always check the number printed on your box before buying.

Does this calculator include skirting tiles?

No. Skirting tiles go on the lower wall edge and are measured by the room perimeter, not the floor area. Measure the perimeter separately and add about 5 percent extra for skirting cuts.

Why does the tool round up to full boxes?

Tiles are sold in sealed boxes, and buying fewer tiles than you need can leave you short if the batch shade differs later. Rounding up to full boxes also keeps a few spare tiles for future repairs.
