How to read the result

  • Total degree cost = (tuition + hostel per semester) × semesters + admission fee + other annual charges × years.
  • Cost per semester = total degree cost ÷ number of semesters. Useful when you plan payments semester by semester.
  • Cheapest is marked green, most expensive red. The cheapest option may still be wrong if its quality, location, or facilities do not suit you.
  • Fees rise most years, so add 5 to 10% per year to these estimates for a realistic budget.

Why total degree cost matters more than tuition

Universities advertise per-semester tuition, but the real number is the full degree cost. Two universities with similar tuition can differ by hundreds of thousands once you add the admission fee, hostel, and annual charges over 4 years.

  • Admission fee: a one-time payment at enrollment, often 10,000 to 50,000.
  • Hostel per semester: can double the yearly cost if you study in another city.
  • Other annual charges: library, lab, examination, and security fees charged every year.
  • Degree length: an 8-semester degree costs a full year more than a 6-semester one, even at the same tuition.

Get the official fee structure from each universitys admissions office or website before deciding, and confirm whether the quoted fee is fixed or increases yearly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare university fees fairly?

Compare the total degree cost, not just per-semester tuition. Include the admission fee, hostel charges, and annual charges over the full degree length. This tool does exactly that and shows the cheapest and most expensive options side by side.

Should hostel charges be included in the comparison?

Yes, if you will live away from home. Hostel fees often add 30 to 50 percent to the yearly cost. If you will live at home, set hostel to 0 for a fair comparison.

Is the cheapest university always the best choice?

No. Cost is only one factor. Also weigh the programs accreditation, faculty, campus facilities, location, and graduate employment rate before making the final decision.

Do university fees stay the same for the whole degree?

Usually not. Most universities raise fees by 5 to 10 percent each year. When budgeting, add a yearly increase to the estimates shown above, and ask the admissions office for their fee increase policy.
