What does waist-to-hip ratio measure?

Your waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is simply your waist measurement divided by your hip measurement. It describes where your body stores fat. Fat stored around the waist (an "apple" shape) is linked with higher health risks than fat stored around the hips and thighs (a "pear" shape), which is why many health organizations use WHR alongside body weight when screening for risk.

The categories used here follow World Health Organization guidance: for men, below 0.90 is lower risk, 0.90 to 0.99 is moderate risk, and 1.00 or above is higher risk. For women, below 0.80 is lower risk, 0.80 to 0.84 is moderate risk, and 0.85 or above is higher risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Waist-to-hip ratio is your waist circumference divided by your hip circumference. It shows how body fat is distributed around your body, which researchers link to certain health risks more closely than total weight alone.

Stand relaxed and wrap a tape measure around the narrowest part of your waist, usually just above the belly button, after breathing out normally. Then measure around the widest part of your hips and buttocks. Keep the tape snug but not squeezing the skin.

The World Health Organization guidance used by this calculator treats below 0.90 as lower risk for men and below 0.80 as lower risk for women. Men at 0.90 to 0.99 and women at 0.80 to 0.84 fall in a moderate range, while 1.00 or higher for men and 0.85 or higher for women indicate a higher risk range.
