What does your speed mean?

SpeedGood for
Under 5 MbpsBasic web browsing, emails, music streaming. Video calls and HD video will struggle.
5–25 MbpsHD video streaming on one or two devices, smooth video calls, online classes.
25–100 Mbps4K video streaming, several devices at once, fast file downloads.
Over 100 MbpsLarge downloads in seconds, many devices streaming and gaming at the same time.

Tip: for the most accurate result, run the test when nobody else is streaming or downloading on your network.

How it works

  1. When you press Start test, the tool fetches a file from this same website 6 times at the same time, with a unique cache-buster so nothing is read from cache.
  2. It records the exact start and finish time with performance.now() and counts the real bytes received.
  3. Speed is calculated as bytes × 8 ÷ seconds ÷ 1,000,000, which gives megabits per second (Mbps).
  4. This is repeated for 5 runs, and the final result is the average — averaging smooths out short spikes and dips.
  5. Only download speed is measured, because that is what matters most for browsing, streaming, and video calls.

Frequently asked questions

How does this WiFi speed test work?

The test downloads a file from this same website several times in parallel and measures how many bytes arrive per second using precise browser timing. It repeats this over 5 runs and shows the average speed in Mbps.

Is the result accurate?

It is a good real-world estimate of your download speed. Browser-based tests measure real transfer time including WiFi and network overhead, so the result can differ slightly from the speed your internet provider advertises.

Why is my speed lower than my internet plan?

Distance from the router, walls, interference from other devices, a busy network, VPNs, and background downloads or updates can all reduce the speed your device actually gets.

Does this test use mobile data?

Yes. Each full test downloads about 1.2 MB, so avoid running it repeatedly on a limited mobile data plan.
