Kitchen Garden Tips
  • Prepare the soil: loosen the soil to a spade depth and mix in well-rotted compost or farmyard manure before sowing.
  • Sunlight: most winter vegetables need at least 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Watering: water in the morning. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged — carrots and radishes split in soggy soil.
  • Thinning: thin carrot and radish seedlings to the spacing in the table so roots grow properly.
  • Frost protection: cover young seedlings on very cold December and January nights with a light cloth or plastic sheet.
  • Succession sowing: sow spinach and coriander every 2 to 3 weeks for a continuous harvest through winter.
  • Natural pest control: spray neem leaf extract or soapy water on aphids instead of chemical sprays on food plants.
