How to use
- Enter your electric bike battery capacity in kWh and its real-world range in kilometers.
- Enter your electricity rate per unit and a charging efficiency between 50 and 100 percent.
- Enter how many kilometers you travel each month.
- Click Calculate Charging Cost to see cost per charge, cost per kilometer, monthly cost and a side-by-side comparison with a petrol bike.
How the calculation works
Units drawn per full charge = battery capacity (kWh) ÷ charging efficiency. Cost per full charge = units drawn × electricity rate. Cost per kilometer = cost per full charge ÷ range. Monthly charging cost = cost per kilometer × monthly distance.
For the comparison, petrol cost per kilometer = petrol price per liter ÷ petrol bike mileage. Monthly petrol cost = petrol cost per kilometer × monthly distance. Monthly saving = monthly petrol cost − monthly charging cost.
Note: this is an estimate. Real range depends on riding speed, load, hills, tyre pressure and battery age. Petrol price changes over time, so update it for an accurate comparison.
Frequently asked questions
How is the cost of one full charge calculated?
The charger draws more energy from the socket than the battery stores. Cost per full charge equals battery capacity in kWh divided by charging efficiency, multiplied by your electricity rate per unit.
How is the electric bike cost per kilometer found?
Cost per kilometer is the cost of one full charge divided by the range that one full charge gives in kilometers.
How does the petrol bike comparison work?
Petrol cost per kilometer equals the petrol price per liter divided by the petrol bike mileage in kilometers per liter. Monthly petrol cost is that value times your monthly distance, and monthly savings are petrol cost minus electric charging cost.
