Lahore Smog 2026: AQI Levels, Causes and Health Tips
Lahore smog 2026 is already here, and October readings are climbing. The air gets worse almost every autumn in Punjab, and the hardest weeks are still ahead. This guide explains what the AQI numbers mean, why smog peaks each winter, what the Punjab government is doing this season, and the health steps that actually work.
What smog is, and why it hits Lahore every winter
Smog is smoke mixed with fog: fine dust, soot and chemical particles from vehicles, factories, brick kilns and burning crop waste, trapped close to the ground. In autumn and winter, Lahore gets temperature inversion — a layer of warm air sits above colder air near the ground, so pollutants cannot rise and spread. Add low wind, and the dirty air just hangs over the city for days.
This is why Lahore's smog season runs mainly from October to February, with the worst period usually from November to mid-December. Past peak seasons have seen AQI readings above 400 — the hazardous range — and October is the early warning: the pattern repeats, and the worst weeks are still ahead.
The AQI scale, explained simply
The Air Quality Index converts pollution levels into one number. Higher means worse. The main pollutant in Lahore smog is PM2.5 — particles tiny enough to enter the bloodstream through the lungs.
| AQI range | Level | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 0 - 50 | Good | Air is clean. Normal outdoor activity is fine. |
| 51 - 100 | Moderate | Acceptable for most people. Unusually sensitive people should watch for symptoms. |
| 101 - 150 | Unhealthy for sensitive groups | Children, older people and those with asthma or heart disease should limit long outdoor activity. |
| 151 - 200 | Unhealthy | Everyone may feel irritation. Avoid outdoor exercise; keep vulnerable family indoors. |
| 201 - 300 | Very unhealthy | Serious health effects possible. Stay indoors as much as you can and wear an N95 outside. |
| 301 and above | Hazardous | Emergency conditions. Avoid all outdoor activity and seal your home. |

Why smog peaks in Lahore each winter
The sources are mostly the same every year, and they stack up at once in November:
- Vehicle emissions: old vehicles, heavy trucks and traffic congestion — especially the morning school run.
- Crop-residue burning: after the rice harvest, farmers burn leftover stubble to clear fields quickly, and the smoke drifts into cities.
- Brick kilns: traditional kilns burning coal and other fuels.
- Industrial emissions: small factories and units running low-quality coal without proper filtration.
- Construction dust: open building sites across the city add fine dust.
- The weather trap: temperature inversion, low wind and cold still air keep all of it near the ground.
Rain and strong wind are the biggest natural reliefs — October rains this season showed how quickly the air can improve after a downpour.
What the Punjab government is doing this season
Punjab started anti-smog operations early this year. Reported measures so far include:
- Anti-smog vehicle crackdown starting mid-October, checking fitness certificates and acting against vehicles emitting black smoke.
- Industrial inspections: early-October reporting mentioned sealed units and fines running into lakhs of rupees, including sealed brick kilns.
- School carpooling: the Punjab EPA directed Lahore schools to arrange shared transport on common routes to cut morning traffic pollution.
- Pre-Smog Action Plan in public schools: limit outdoor activities, check AQI before outdoor exercise, keep doors and windows closed on poor-air days, and have students wear masks.
- Road dust control: water sprinkling over long stretches of roads, plus warnings against burning solid waste, tyres, rubber and plastic.
How smog affects your health
The Punjab EPA advisory treats children, older people and patients with lung or heart disease as vulnerable groups — the people most at risk. Fine PM2.5 particles can cause:
- Eye, nose and throat irritation, coughing and chest tightness.
- Asthma flare-ups and worsened breathing problems for people with chronic lung disease.
- Higher risk for heart patients, since fine particles stress the heart and blood vessels.
- Headaches and tiredness during prolonged exposure.
Important: these are general health tips, not medical advice. If you have asthma, heart disease or persistent breathing difficulty, follow your doctor's plan and keep prescribed medicine ready.
How to protect yourself and your family
- Check the AQI every morning. Plan outdoor exercise and long outdoor errands around it. When AQI is above 150, avoid outdoor exercise entirely; above 100, cut back and keep vulnerable family members indoors.
- Wear the right mask. A properly fitted N95 or KN95 mask blocks fine PM2.5 particles. Cloth masks and thin surgical masks do not protect against fine particles.
- Keep doors and windows closed during peak pollution hours, especially early morning and evening.
- Use an air purifier indoors if you can. Run it in the room where you spend the most time, and keep its filters clean.
- Avoid adding indoor pollution. Do not burn wood, coal or trash indoors, and ventilate carefully when cooking with gas.
- Wash up when you come inside. Change clothes and wash your face and hands — particles settle on skin and clothes.
- Cut the morning traffic you can control. If your school has a carpool plan, join it. Fewer cars on the road helps everyone.
- Carry your medicine. Asthma and heart patients should keep inhalers or prescribed medicine with them during the season and have a written action plan.
When will the smog season end?
The season usually eases after February as temperatures rise and winds pick up — but the peak is expected from November to mid-December. Keep checking official advisories through the winter, because policy measures (and possible school or office orders) change as conditions change.
