Minimum Taxable Salary in Pakistan 2026: Do You Pay Income Tax?

If you earn a salary in Pakistan, the first question is simple: does your salary reach the point where income tax starts? For tax year 2026-27, that line is Rs 600,000 per year — Rs 50,000 per month. Earn up to that amount and your salary is fully tax-free. This guide shows the full FBR slab table, worked examples, and what to do when you cross the line.

The simple answer

Annual taxable salary of Rs 600,000 or less = 0% tax. That equals a monthly salary of Rs 50,000. The moment your annual salary crosses Rs 600,000, tax applies — but only to the slice of income above the threshold, never to the whole amount. A salary of Rs 61,000 per month (Rs 732,000 per year) is not taxed on Rs 732,000 — it is taxed at 1% only on Rs 132,000, the part above Rs 600,000.

FBR salaried tax slabs 2026-27

The Finance Act 2026 uses eight progressive bands for salaried individuals. Each rate applies only to the income inside that band:

Annual taxable salaryMonthly equivalentTax payable
Up to Rs 600,000Up to Rs 50,0000% — no tax
Rs 600,001 - 1,200,000Rs 50,001 - 100,0001% of amount above Rs 600,000
Rs 1,200,001 - 2,200,000Rs 100,001 - 183,333Rs 6,000 + 11% of amount above Rs 1,200,000
Rs 2,200,001 - 3,200,000Rs 183,334 - 266,667Rs 116,000 + 20% of amount above Rs 2,200,000
Rs 3,200,001 - 4,100,000Rs 266,668 - 341,667Rs 316,000 + 25% of amount above Rs 3,200,000
Rs 4,100,001 - 5,600,000Rs 341,668 - 466,667Rs 541,000 + 29% of amount above Rs 4,100,000

Worked examples

Example 1 — Rs 60,000/month: Rs 60,000 x 12 = Rs 720,000 per year. This is in the 1% band: 1% of (720,000 - 600,000) = 1% of 120,000 = Rs 1,200 per year, about Rs 100 per month. Small tax, but not zero.

Example 2 — Rs 100,000/month: Rs 100,000 x 12 = Rs 1,200,000 per year. Still the 1% band: 1% of (1,200,000 - 600,000) = 1% of 600,000 = Rs 6,000 per year, about Rs 500 per month deducted from your payslip.

Example 3 — Rs 250,000/month: Rs 250,000 x 12 = Rs 3,000,000 per year. This sits in the 2.2M-3.2M band: 116,000 + 20% of (3,000,000 - 2,200,000) = 116,000 + 160,000 = Rs 276,000 per year, about Rs 23,000 per month. This is where the tax bite becomes serious.

What counts as salary

It is not only your basic pay. Taxable allowances — house rent, conveyance, dearness and similar allowances — are part of salary income for tax purposes. A few reliefs apply: Zakat paid through official channels is deductible, and the medical allowance is exempt up to 10% of basic salary when you are not covered by a medical scheme. Provident fund and EOBI contributions are handled separately from income tax.

The small-raise trap

Getting a raise from Rs 50,000 to Rs 55,000 per month feels like progress — but Rs 660,000 per year pushes you into the taxable zone: 1% of 60,000 = Rs 600 per year. That is trivial. The real trap is higher up: because rates are marginal, only the slice above each line is taxed at the higher rate. Your marginal rate is the rate on your top slice; your effective rate (total tax divided by total salary) is always lower. Never turn down a raise because you fear the tax — you always keep most of it.

Below the limit — do you still need to file?

Being under Rs 600,000 per year does not automatically free you from filing. You may still have to file if you own immovable property of 500 square yards or more, own a motor vehicle of 1,000cc or more, are registered for sales tax, or have won a large prize. Even when filing is not required, it is often worth it: filing puts you on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL), which lowers withholding taxes on bank transactions, property deals and car purchases.

Frequently asked questions

No. Rs 50,000 per month equals Rs 600,000 per year, which sits inside the 0% bracket of the FBR salaried slab table for FY 2026-27 under the Finance Act 2026. Income tax starts only on annual salary above Rs 600,000.

Rs 60,000 per month is Rs 720,000 per year, which falls in the 600,001 to 1,200,000 slab: 1% of the amount above Rs 600,000. That works out to 1% of Rs 120,000 = Rs 1,200 per year, roughly Rs 100 per month.

Rs 100,000 per month is Rs 1,200,000 per year, still in the 1% slab: 1% of Rs 600,000 (the amount above the Rs 600,000 threshold) = Rs 6,000 per year, roughly Rs 500 per month deducted from your salary.

Yes. Taxable allowances such as house rent and conveyance are part of salary income for tax purposes. Zakat paid through official channels is deductible, and the medical allowance is exempt up to 10% of basic salary when you are not on a medical scheme.

Possibly. Income below Rs 600,000 per year is not the only trigger — owning immovable property of 500 square yards or more, a motor vehicle of 1,000cc or more, sales tax registration, or a large prize-bond win can also require filing. Filing also puts you on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL), which lowers withholding tax on bank transactions, property deals and vehicle purchases.
