How the 1LINK and MNET networks work
Pakistan has two interbank switch networks: 1LINK and MNET. They connect the ATM networks of different banks so that you can use any bank's ATM with your own debit card. When you use your own bank's ATM, the transaction stays inside that bank's system and is normally free. When you use another bank's ATM, the transaction travels through 1LINK or MNET, and your bank pays a switching fee — which it passes on to you as an interbank ATM charge.
| Transaction type | Same-bank ATM | Other-bank ATM (1LINK / MNET) |
|---|---|---|
| Cash withdrawal | Free (usually) | Around Rs 23.44 per transaction |
| Balance inquiry | Free (usually) | Around Rs 5.87 per transaction |
| Mini statement | Free (usually) | Around Rs 8.80 per transaction |
Typical figures only. The listed amounts include federal excise duty where banks add it; your bank may charge slightly more or less.
Tips to reduce ATM charges
- Use your own bank's ATMs — same-bank withdrawals are generally free, so plan your route around them.
- Withdraw larger amounts less often — one Rs 20,000 withdrawal costs one fee; four Rs 5,000 withdrawals cost four fees.
- Check balances in your mobile banking app — app inquiries are free, while ATM inquiries on another bank's machine are charged.
- Ask about package accounts — some current and salary accounts include a number of free interbank transactions per month.
- Use branchless banking or mobile wallets for small transfers instead of withdrawing cash through another bank's ATM.
Note
ATM fees are set by each bank in its Schedule of Charges and are revised from time to time, sometimes twice a year. The default fees in this calculator are the most commonly charged amounts in Pakistan, but your bank's current schedule may differ. Always check your own bank's latest Schedule of Charges or mobile app before relying on these figures.
