How the comparison is calculated
Daily units for each AC are running watts divided by 1,000, times daily hours. The yearly electricity bill is daily units times tariff times 30 days times the months used per year. Yearly savings is the normal AC yearly bill minus the inverter AC yearly bill. Payback period is the extra purchase price of the inverter AC divided by the yearly savings. The 5-year total is purchase price plus 5 times the yearly bill.
Frequently asked questions
A typical 1.5-ton inverter AC (about 1,200 W) compared to a normal AC (about 1,700 W), running 8 hours a day for 6 months a year at Rs 65 per kWh, saves roughly Rs 37,000 to Rs 40,000 per year on electricity.
The payback period is the extra purchase price of the inverter AC divided by the yearly electricity savings. For example, Rs 40,000 extra divided by Rs 38,000 yearly saving gives a payback of about 1.1 years.
The 5-year total adds the purchase price to 5 years of running cost, which shows the true long-term cost of each option. An inverter AC usually wins on the 5-year total even though its purchase price is higher.
The defaults of about 1,200 W for a 1.5-ton inverter AC and 1,700 W for a normal AC are common averages and are marked as estimates. Check the label on your AC or bill and adjust the values for a more accurate comparison.
